2. How often should gutters be cleaned on a home in Delta, BC?

For the average home in Delta or the Lower Mainland, we recommend having your gutters cleaned twice a year.

Once during the Spring and once in the Fall.

However, some neighbourhoods with more trees and bushes may need extra cleanings.

A home can also benefit from cleaning the gutters after a big storm.

At a minimum, your gutters should be checked and cleaned at least once per year.

Why should you clean your gutters?

In short: Clean gutters help protect your home from rain water damage.

3. Why should I get my gutters cleaned? Is it really necessary?

We get this question all the time.

“Why do I need to clean my rain gutters?”

“Is it really that necessary?”

Yes. It’s very important.

In short: A clean gutter (or eavestrough) system helps protect your home when it rains.

Gutters are vital to protecting a home from water damage. They direct the rainwater away from the roof by channeling the rain towards the downspouts first, and then eventually to a drain.

This keeps the water from soaking into the roof and away from the siding and foundation.

Throughout the year, leaves and other debris that fall into your gutters can create clogs.

This can cause water to build up.

Over time, if the rainwater can’t drain properly, it can end up in all the wrong places.

Ultimately, it can damage the home.

Vancouver gets approx. 165 days of rain a year.

If a gutter is clogged and the rainwater can’t drain, you may be looking at more expensive problems.

On average Vancouver BC, gets about 165 days of rain per year.

And while our temperatures don’t usually drop below zero degrees here, it should be noted that pooled water in the winter can freeze.

Frozen rainwater that expands can damage the gutter system.

Cleaning your gutters regularly is an important part of protecting the life of your home.

4. What happens if I don't clean my gutters?

Just like your vehicle needs regular maintenance.

So does your home.

Cleaning your gutters is like a tune-up, or an oil change.

If you neglect these fairly inexpensive tasks today, you might run into more expensive headaches down the road.

Here are some of the things we find in gutters:

  • Leaves, pine needles and broken branches
  • Dust, silt and mud
  • Plants and moss growing
  • Bird nests
  • Rodents, birds and other critters
  • Plastic bags, wrappers and other trash that arrives on windy days
  • Sports equipment like balls or kids toys
If you don’t schedule regular cleanings, you can easily end up with a gutter or eavestrough system that becomes plugged.

Eventually, you could be looking at a much bigger problem like:

  • Leaky roof
  • Roof rot
  • Damaged soffit and fascia
  • Water seeping into the interior walls
  • Weakened structural integrity of walls and siding
  • Mold growth
  • Water in the basement
  • Damaged foundation

Even with regular maintenance, gutters break down as they age.

A home that’s older than 25 years old may need new gutters.

All of these issues are costly to fix.

That’s why we recommend cleaning your gutters at least once per year.

And if you live near a bunch of overhanging trees, a more proactive approach is twice per year.

One thing to remember: Even with regular maintenance, gutters will break down. If your home is older than 25 years, it might be time to replace your current gutter or eavestrough system.

We believe hiring a professional makes the most sense.

However, if you’re the DIY-type, here are some tips for cleaning gutters on your own.

6. Tips for cleaning gutters on your own

There are many ways to clean a gutter out. Some involve owning expensive tools or spending a lot of time walking around on the roof.

One question we get all the time:

“What are the best tools for cleaning my gutters?”

Now while a pressure washer and leaf blower are definitely handy tools to own, they’re not essential.

For us, we believe a safe and effective cleaning can be done  with:

  • a ladder
  • a few tools
  • and cleaning your gutters by hand

If you’re comfortable with heights, follow these tips to stay safe and ensure you get a good cleaning.

Expensive tools are always handy but a good ladder with stand-off stabilizers will do just fine on most homes.

1. Work with a good extendable ladder

  • Use stand-off stabilizers to avoid damaging the gutters
  • Make sure it is on a steady surface, free of rocks and leaves
  • Avoid standing on the top 4 rungs
  • Keep your waist between the rails of the ladder. Don’t lean too far left or right.
  • If you feel yourself reaching, it’s time to move the ladder.
  • If possible, ask a friend to help move the ladder and hold it steady.

If you don’t feel confident on a ladder, we encourage you to find someone who is.

Or call a professional.

There’s a lot that goes into using a ladder safely and effectively.

If you’re not confident, we strongly suggest finding someone who is. Or call in a professional.

Too many accidents happen this way. These are all easily avoidable.

Before you set up your ladder, make sure you have the proper clothing and equipment.

Gutter cleaning is a dirty job.

Here’s what you’ll need:

2. Clothing:

  • Long sleeve shirt – something old, expect to get it dirty
  • Comfortable work pants – you’ll be climbing up and down the ladder a lot
  • Work gloves – to keep your hands clean and protects from cuts and scratches
  • Protective eyewear – always beware of sticks, mud and flying debris
  • Rubber non-slip shoes or work boots

3. Additional Equipment:

  • Garden hose with a spray nozzle
  • Small sand shovel (trowel or plastic scoop)
  • Rake – to remove the leaves from the roof
  • Bucket and garbage bags to gather the waste
  • Tarp – placed on the ground to collect the debris instead of the lawn

Once you have all the tools, the rest is fairly simple. Clean the gutters of all the leaves and other debris and dispose in compost.

After the gutters are cleaned, flush the gutters and downspouts with water from the hose. This is a great way to find clogs and identify leaks.

Finally, here are a few additional things to consider:

  • If possible, pick a dry day to do it. Ladders are slippery in the rain. Think safety first.
  • On the day of the clean, let a friend or family member know that you’ll be on the roof and using a ladder
  • Rake the leaves off the roof first… or prepare to clean the gutters next weekend too!
  • Watch for power lines.
  • If you’re tired, take a break.
